Sildenafil Citrate 100 mg tablets, popularly known by the brand name Viagra, are widely used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. In India, this medication is also commonly marketed under the name Filagra. Erectile dysfunction is a condition where a man has difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection suitable for sexual activity. Sildenafil Citrate, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the blood vessels, leading to increased blood flow, especially in the penile region, which facilitates a firm and sustained erection during sexual stimulation.

In addition to its use in treating ED, another formulation of Sildenafil under the brand name Revatio is approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — a condition characterized by high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. In this setting, Sildenafil helps improve exercise capacity in both men and women by relaxing blood vessels and reducing the workload on the heart.

Patients should follow their doctor’s instructions carefully when using Sildenafil. It is typically taken 30–60 minutes before sexual activity and should not be taken more than once in 24 hours. Common side effects may include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, dizziness, and upset stomach. Patients with heart conditions, low blood pressure, or those taking nitrate medications should avoid using Sildenafil without medical supervision.
